Namecheap free SSL depends on the hosting product and your domain setup. Shared Hosting’s introductory certificate and EasyWP’s Let’s Encrypt option follow different rules. Before buying hosting, separate the included certificate, its renewal arrangements and the DNS requirements.
Quick decision: Choose the hosting features you need first. For Shared Hosting, include SSL after the promotional year in your running-cost checklist. For EasyWP, verify that your domain and DNS setup qualify for the dashboard’s free SSL option before moving the site.

Shared Hosting: what the free first year includes
Namecheap’s promotion provides an introductory certificate for eligible hosted domains and subdomains, with a limit of 50 per cPanel account. The offer covers individual names rather than unlimited wildcard coverage. A domain that already used the promotion does not get a fresh free year simply by moving to another Namecheap account.
The published terms describe purchasing a renewal after the free year. Keep that recurring item separate from your hosting renewal. Check the actual certificate quote in your account rather than assuming the first-year hosting price includes every future SSL cost. See the official offer conditions.
EasyWP: free SSL and the domain eligibility catch
Namecheap documents a free Let’s Encrypt certificate for EasyWP Starter, Turbo and Supersonic. Its general SSL guide currently describes this as available for Namecheap domains. Temporary EasyWP addresses have a default certificate managed on the platform. See EasyWP’s certificate options.
There is an important qualification: the detailed free-SSL setup guide also documents an external-registrar route using Namecheap FreeDNS and the “Your Domain on Namecheap” dashboard option. Because the two guides describe eligibility differently, ask support to confirm your exact domain, DNS provider and dashboard path before changing nameservers. The detailed FreeDNS instructions are the relevant reference for that exception.
A registrar transfer and a DNS change are different operations. Do not move the registration merely because a dashboard option is unclear. First establish whether your present configuration is supported and what will happen to email records.
How to activate SSL without disrupting the site
On Shared Hosting: check that the domain points to the correct hosting service, then open cPanel → Exclusive for Namecheap Customers → Namecheap SSL. The plugin manages eligible automatic installations and reports certificate status. Namecheap warns that incorrect pointing can leave issuance in progress; see its SSL plugin guide.
On EasyWP: open the website panel, find SSL Certificate, select Manage and Add, then choose the Let’s Encrypt option if it is available for your setup. The documented activation process can take up to five minutes and enables the HTTPS redirect after installation. Follow the official dashboard walkthrough.
- Before a DNS change, copy existing website and mail records and make a current backup.
- Test the exact address visitors use, including the www version if you serve it.
- Open a normal article, an image and a contact form over HTTPS. Confirm that they load without certificate warnings.
- Check internal links and embedded media if the page reports insecure content. Keep the working certificate in place while troubleshooting.

Renewal: three dates that should stay on your checklist
Track the domain registration, hosting subscription and certificate expiry separately. Paying one bill does not establish that every other service is covered. For a small business, a short service inventory is easier to maintain than trying to remember which introductory bundle contained which item.
For the Namecheap SSL plugin, a Reorder option appears near the end of an applicable paid subscription. After the renewal purchase, the plugin attempts installation automatically for a correctly pointed domain. Confirm that the new certificate is actually served to visitors, rather than stopping at the payment receipt. The plugin’s renewal section explains this workflow.
For Let’s Encrypt, determine who manages issuance and renewal. Its getting-started guide distinguishes hosting-managed certificates from operating your own ACME client. If you use a managed hosting feature, confirm that it remains active after any domain or DNS changes. If you manage certificates yourself, include renewal monitoring and maintenance time in the decision.
Should you buy a paid SSL certificate instead?
For an ordinary blog, start by checking whether the included certificate covers the required hostnames and has a dependable renewal process. A paid checkout item should solve an identified need: supported installation, a particular validation requirement, hostname coverage or a service arrangement you actually need.
Do not assume a higher price automatically improves the underlying website. SSL protects the connection; you still need software updates, sensible account security and working backups. Likewise, a valid certificate alone does not tell you whether a contact form delivers messages or whether a migration preserved every page.
If you are considering a third-party certificate on Shared Hosting, confirm the supported installation and renewal method first. Avoid building a plan around server access or automation that your hosting account does not provide.
Before Black Friday: compare the whole setup
Use the sale period to compare your total operating needs. Record the checkout total, renewal quote, SSL arrangements, backup requirements and email costs. A low introductory hosting price can be attractive, but it is only one line in that worksheet. This guide does not assume that an unverified Black Friday discount is live.
- One WordPress site: compare EasyWP’s dashboard and domain eligibility with the controls you need.
- Several sites or cPanel workflows: compare the Shared Hosting packages and account for certificate renewals.
- An existing business mailbox: preserve MX and related mail records while changing web hosting or DNS.
- An existing live site: plan SSL activation alongside the migration, with testing before the old service is canceled.

Frequently asked questions
Is Namecheap free SSL permanent?
Do not apply one rule to all products. Shared Hosting advertises an introductory year; EasyWP documents a separate free Let’s Encrypt feature with domain and DNS conditions.
Can an external domain use free SSL on EasyWP?
The detailed EasyWP guide documents a FreeDNS-based route. Confirm the supported configuration with Namecheap before changing DNS because its overview guide is narrower.
Does renewing hosting renew my certificate too?
Check the certificate separately. The Shared Hosting promotional documentation describes purchasing an SSL renewal; a hosting payment alone should not be treated as proof of coverage.
Should I disable HTTPS to avoid a renewal?
Keep visitors on a valid HTTPS connection. Arrange a supported renewal or replacement before the current certificate expires and test it afterward.
Our recommendation
Choose Shared Hosting when its controls fit your workflow and you can manage the ongoing certificate cost. Choose EasyWP when its WordPress-focused dashboard fits your site and the free certificate works with your domain configuration. Before paying, verify those two points: who handles renewal, and which hostnames are covered.
Editorial note: This is a documentation-based guide, not a performance benchmark or a claim of hands-on testing. Product terms and dashboard options can change; verify your account’s current eligibility before purchase.
