Namecheap Hosting Migration: Website, Email & DNS Checklist

Namecheap Hosting Migration title with two servers, a website window and an email envelope

Namecheap hosting migration needs a plan for three things: your website, your business email and the DNS records connecting them. A successful file copy does not prove that messages, contact forms or new orders will arrive in the right place.

Plan the move before changing DNS

Keep the old account. Confirm the transfer scope.

Namecheap offers migration assistance, but the route depends on your current control panel and destination service. Confirm what will be copied, what needs separate work and when you can test the destination.

Which Namecheap hosting migration route fits?

Start by identifying the source control panel and the product you actually want to buy. Shared Hosting and EasyWP use different workflows; our Namecheap Shared Hosting vs EasyWP comparison explains the product choice.

Your starting point Route to discuss What to confirm first
Active cPanel account Request assessment for a full cPanel transfer to compatible Namecheap Shared Hosting. Whether the source account fits destination limits and a full backup can be generated.
hPanel or another non-cPanel account Request a case-specific manual transfer assessment. Website files, database access and separate mailbox handling.
WordPress moving to EasyWP Use the supported EasyWP migration workflow or ask its team about your site. Destination subscription, WordPress access, compatibility and domain connection.
Old hosting already expired Ask whether an existing complete backup can be restored. Backup completeness and age; whether newer content is missing.

Namecheap’s migration knowledgebase distinguishes full cPanel transfers from manual assistance. For full transfers, its team checks account size, hosted sites, databases and software compatibility. Restoring a source backup can overwrite data already on the destination; disclose any live destination content before authorizing a restore.

A website migration is not a domain-registration transfer.

You can plan a hosting move while keeping the same domain name. Avoid bundling a registrar change into the same cutover unless it serves a clear purpose. Namecheap’s Shared Hosting setup guide also describes pointing a domain with an A record while retaining its current nameservers.

Before requesting a transfer: build a short inventory

A useful request describes the project before sharing access. Namecheap lists its Hosting Transfers team at [email protected] in the official support directory. Use its official support process to confirm eligibility and the access method.

  1. List everything using the account. Include websites, subdomains, mailboxes, scheduled tasks and business integrations.
  2. Record what must remain unchanged. Note the primary domain, important URLs, email provider and any external DNS/CDN service.
  3. Keep recoverable copies. Back up website files and the database together; verify you can access those copies outside the old hosting account.
  4. Check the destination fit. Compare storage, website count, database needs and application requirements before committing to a billing term.
  5. Agree a change window. Decide who freezes edits or orders, who approves DNS changes and who checks the result.
  6. Set an overlap budget. Leave time to investigate a problem without losing access to the original site.

For WordPress, the official backup guidance treats the database and files as separate parts of a recoverable site. A database export alone does not contain your uploaded media, themes and plugins.

Namecheap’s cPanel transfer instructions ask for the old account to remain active for at least three days after requesting assistance. Its migration offer page gives a three-to-seven-day overlap requirement. Allow the longer window where possible and get the team to confirm the timing for your request.

Email and DNS need their own checklist

Decide whether email is staying or moving. Keeping an external mail provider can avoid an unnecessary mailbox move. If email lives on the old hosting account, cancellation may also remove that service; confirm the destination and historical-message transfer first.

Namecheap’s Hostinger transfer guide explicitly separates website data from mailbox migration. Its general migration guide likewise describes manual email-transfer methods. Do not assume that copying WordPress copies inbox history, contacts or your mail app settings.

  • Capture the current DNS zone: retain the values and the place where they are managed.
  • Confirm mail routing: record the MX records for the chosen email provider, plus its required authentication records.
  • Review authentication: check the intended SPF, DKIM and DMARC setup rather than pasting a second, conflicting policy.
  • Plan access: confirm which mailbox settings will change and whether users need to reconnect their mail apps.
  • Test both directions: send and receive with an independent mailbox, and inspect any bounce rather than relying on a green send status.

The right DNS editor depends on the authoritative nameservers. Namecheap’s host-record instructions explain why a domain using third-party or hosting nameservers may not expose records in its registrar’s Advanced DNS screen. Its MX-record guide covers selecting the mail configuration for the actual provider.

Example: the website moves, the mailboxes stay.

A business using an external email provider can move its website while retaining that email service. The cutover plan should preserve the relevant mail records and verify mail afterwards. This is a planning example, not a guarantee for every DNS configuration.

Test the destination before changing live traffic

Request a supported preview method and compare the destination against a small list of essential tasks. WordPress’s migration handbook distinguishes a same-domain server move from a change of website address. A temporary preview URL should not become the unintended public address.

Checkpoint What to verify Evidence to keep
Website content Key pages, media, menus and important existing URLs load correctly. A short list of checked URLs and unexpected redirects.
Business actions Contact forms, bookings or checkout complete under the agreed test method. Test records and actual notifications; avoid unintended live charges.
Email Inbound, outbound and website-generated mail behave as intended. Received messages and any full bounce report.
HTTPS and indexing The intended host serves valid HTTPS; temporary noindex or access restrictions are reviewed. Final URL, canonical and robots settings.
Recovery A named person can access the previous site and the agreed backup. Rollback trigger, owner and recovery location.

For a shop, membership site or active booking system, plan how changes made during the copy are reconciled. Otherwise the destination can launch without recent orders or registrations. WordPress’s same-domain migration lesson warns that content added after an export will not automatically appear in that exported copy.

Change DNS only after the agreed checks pass. Keep monitoring the original and destination during the transition. Namecheap describes propagation as potentially taking up to 24–48 hours; that is not a reason to cancel the old account immediately or a guarantee of identical timing everywhere.

Compare the full cost before buying

Free migration assistance does not make the entire project free. Compare the initial hosting invoice, renewal total, overlap with your old host and any separate email, backup or paid-software requirements. Ask who handles work outside the transfer scope.

Before paying, choose two suitable plans and compare the same billing term. A longer introductory subscription is a commitment, not just a smaller monthly number. Our Namecheap offers hub connects the pricing and product guides.

Namecheap hosting migration questions

Is migration to Namecheap free?

Namecheap advertises migration assistance without a transfer fee, subject to the service and account being eligible. Full cPanel transfers and manual transfers follow different assessment routes. Confirm your exact scope with the team before purchasing solely for that benefit.

Does the 24-hour promise cover every transfer?

No. Namecheap ties its detailed 24-hour and limited-downtime guarantee to eligible full cPanel migrations; partial and manual work can differ. Its credit remedy has conditions, and the offer excludes promo packages. Read the current guarantee and get your case confirmed.

Will my business email move with WordPress?

Do not assume so. A website migration and a mailbox migration are different tasks. Ask whether a full account transfer includes the relevant mail data, or arrange a separate transfer or continued email hosting.

Do I have to move my domain registration too?

A hosting move can retain your domain name and registrar. Plan the DNS connection separately. If you also want a registrar transfer, schedule it deliberately rather than treating it as a required first step.

When can I cancel the old hosting?

After the new website, mail flow, recent data and recovery arrangements have been verified and the agreed overlap has passed. Keep access longer when an unresolved issue or active data change makes cancellation risky.
