Quick answer
Start with BasicDNS if it already handles your domain reliably and meets your requirements. Consider PremiumDNS when its DNS-specific availability commitment and protection features solve a business need. An upgrade does not replace hosting, backups or a working email configuration.

What you are buying with a DNS upgrade
DNS connects a domain name with the records used to reach your website, mail service and other tools. Namecheap describes PremiumDNS as a paid service with globally distributed Anycast locations and DNS-level DDoS protection. Its availability commitment concerns DNS resolution.
That scope matters when comparing a checkout add-on. A responsive DNS service can still point visitors to a web server that is unavailable. Likewise, a healthy web server cannot answer a visitor who cannot resolve the domain. Evaluate each service in the chain rather than expecting one upgrade to solve every kind of outage.
Ask which problem you are trying to reduce. If the site is slow because of heavy images or application errors, investigate those first. If the concern is authoritative DNS availability, a managed DNS product is relevant to that part of the setup.
When BasicDNS may be enough
A small publishing site does not automatically need every optional service in a domain cart. If your current DNS configuration supports the records you need and is working well, keeping it can be a reasonable choice. Write down the business requirement before adding another recurring subscription.
Check where the active zone is managed. Namecheap’s DNS-provider guide distinguishes BasicDNS from Web Hosting DNS and third-party nameservers. Registering a domain with Namecheap does not establish that its DNS records are currently managed there.
This is especially useful when another company manages your hosting or mail. Make a short service inventory: registrar, active nameservers, website destination and email provider. Keep it with your maintenance notes so the next change starts from facts rather than assumptions.
When PremiumDNS belongs on your shortlist
Shortlist the paid service when DNS availability and its contractual commitment matter to your business, and the features fit your domain setup. Compare the ongoing bill with the value of the requirement it addresses. A small fee can still be unnecessary if the requirement is already covered elsewhere.
Read the SLA before treating an uptime percentage as an unconditional promise. The published terms define eligibility, remedies and exclusions. This guide does not claim compensation for lost sales or guarantee uninterrupted website operation.
Review DNSSEC compatibility separately. Namecheap’s PremiumDNS overview says its DNSSEC feature currently excludes domains registered outside Namecheap. Confirm your registrar and domain extension with support before buying specifically for that feature. Do not assume that PremiumDNS compatibility with an external domain means every optional feature is available for it.

Review Namecheap DNS options →Switching DNS: prepare the records before the change
Namecheap says records are copied automatically when moving from its BasicDNS to PremiumDNS. For domains using custom nameservers, its guide calls for creating the host records manually. See the official switching details.
Even when a copy is automatic, compare the destination with your current inventory. Include the root domain, www, live subdomains, mail routing, verification records and any other service-specific entries. Record existing values and TTLs so you have a reference if something behaves unexpectedly.
- Identify the nameservers currently serving the domain.
- Export or document the active DNS zone.
- Prepare and check the destination records.
- Coordinate DNSSEC or DS-record changes with the providers if they are enabled.
- Change nameservers through the supported workflow.
- Test the website, mail and important subdomains after the change.
Keep the previous service available while validating the result. Cached responses mean different visitors can temporarily see different destinations. Avoid stacking unrelated hosting, email and DNS changes into the same maintenance window unless the migration plan explicitly covers all of them.

Keep business email working during a DNS move
A website loading successfully does not prove that email is healthy. Preserve the mail provider’s required MX records and its authentication entries. Follow the values supplied for your actual mailbox service rather than copying records from an unrelated tutorial.
Namecheap documents that cPanel email can work even when the domain uses remote nameservers. The necessary mail records belong at the active DNS provider, and cPanel Email Routing must match the setup. Its remote-DNS email guide explains that arrangement.
Test incoming and outgoing messages with an unrelated address, then test contact-form notifications. Keep a record of the results and check the mail provider’s authentication diagnostics. If only one direction fails, investigate the relevant routing or sending configuration before changing everything again.

Costs, renewal and Black Friday buying checks
Compare the purchase price and renewal charge over the same period. Confirm the domain attached to the subscription, the billing term and the renewal controls. Namecheap’s overview says a PremiumDNS subscription belongs to a particular domain and cannot later be reassigned to another.
For an external domain, examine what happens when the subscription expires. The provider warns that an expired PremiumDNS service can interrupt DNS for third-party domains. Build renewal reminders and account ownership into your operating process.
A seasonal promotion should fit an existing requirement. This article does not promise a particular Black Friday discount. Save the cart and service terms before paying, and compare the DNS charge with your other recurring domain, hosting and mailbox costs.

Frequently asked questions
Is PremiumDNS required for Namecheap hosting?
Choose DNS based on your supported configuration and requirements. A paid DNS subscription is a separate decision from purchasing hosting.
Will PremiumDNS guarantee my website never goes offline?
The advertised commitment concerns DNS resolution. Hosting availability, the application and other services still affect whether visitors can use the site.
Can I keep my current email provider?
Yes, provided the destination DNS zone preserves the records required by that email provider and the rest of the mail setup remains correct.
Do I need to move my website files when changing DNS?
A DNS change does not transfer content. If the hosting stays the same, preserve its correct destination records. A hosting migration needs its own transfer and testing plan.
Choose the DNS service your setup needs
Keep BasicDNS when it fits. Evaluate PremiumDNS when its features solve a defined requirement, then verify the complete configuration.
