A Preply trial lesson is a paid first meeting with a tutor. Before booking, compare the teaching fit, the time you can attend and the full checkout amount. Use the trial to decide whether you want to continue learning together.

Find the tutor before you choose the plan

Your first lesson should help you answer one question: can this tutor help with the conversations you actually need to have? Start with a shortlist, a clear goal and a price you can comfortably afford.

Paid trials. No student discount is claimed. Check your own checkout and booking terms.

How much does a Preply trial lesson cost?

There is no single trial price that applies to every tutor. Look at the chosen profile, selected duration and final booking screen. A promotional headline elsewhere is not a substitute for the amount shown on your order.

Preply’s payment guide says the trial is charged separately at booking. It also explains processing fees, applicable taxes and possible bank conversion charges. Check what is included in your displayed total rather than assuming the profile rate is the complete amount.

Make a small comparison before paying. Record each shortlisted tutor’s trial total, duration, regular lesson rate and suitable recurring slots. A low trial price is less useful if you cannot afford or attend the lessons that follow.

For illustration, a hypothetical trial costing $12 is a different purchase from a later plan costing $80 per cycle. Neither number is a Preply quote. Keep the initial test and your ongoing learning budget separate.

Choose 25 or 50 minutes by what you need to assess

Our editorial recommendation is to choose the shorter option when your main aim is to meet the tutor and discuss a focused goal. Consider the longer option if you want more room for a short practice activity and feedback. The tutor’s lesson structure matters as much as the clock.

Trial optionA sensible reason to choose itPrepare this
25 minutesYou have one clear question about teaching fitA short introduction and one learning goal
50 minutesYou want time for a broader discussion and a sample taskAn anonymised example of a situation you find difficult

Do not treat this as a promise of what every tutor will cover. Ask how they structure a trial before selecting the length. A useful answer should explain how the session relates to your current level and goal.

Shortlist a tutor using these five checks

  • Relevant teaching focus: look for the language skill you need, such as beginner speaking, workplace conversation or interview preparation.
  • Usable availability: compare regular time slots, not just a convenient opening for tomorrow.
  • Clear explanations: notice whether the introduction and profile are easy for you to understand.
  • Specific feedback: read reviews for descriptions of teaching style, while remembering another learner’s experience may differ.
  • Sustainable budget: decide what you can spend over several weeks, including any checkout charges.

For a freelancer, “business English” is still broad. You might need to explain a project estimate, clarify a request or discuss a missed deadline. Choose one situation and ask whether the tutor can use it in practice.

If you are still deciding whether tutoring suits your work, read our Preply review for business English. It covers the broader value and subscription trade-offs; this page focuses on the first booking.

Send this message before you book

A short message can reveal whether you and the tutor understand the same goal. Adapt this example rather than sending a long life story:

“Hi, I use English for client calls and sometimes struggle to explain project updates. I can practise on Tuesday or Thursday evenings. Could we discuss my level, try a short role-play and identify what to work on next? How would you structure a first lesson?”

For a beginner, replace the work example with a simple everyday task. For an interview, mention the kind of role and the questions you find difficult. Leave out client identities and confidential documents.

Evaluate the response for relevance. Does the tutor address your goal and explain a plausible approach? A detailed plan is more informative than a general promise to make you fluent quickly.

How to book your first Preply trial

  • Open your chosen tutor’s profile and select the trial booking option.
  • Choose the duration and a suitable calendar slot.
  • Check your time zone and review the final charge.
  • Complete payment only after reviewing the booking details.
  • Confirm that the session appears in your lessons calendar.

Preply’s official instructions describe booking through the profile. If a slot is missing, the tutor may have a booking notice requirement; select a later time or ask about availability.

Before paying, compare the date against your work and family commitments. Leave enough time to set up your device. A trial squeezed between two meetings gives you less attention for judging the teaching fit.

Your preparation checklist: make the first meeting useful

  • Write one goal: “I want to explain a two-minute project update clearly” is easier to discuss than “I want perfect English.”
  • Prepare one example: use an invented client request, a short introduction or a familiar everyday conversation.
  • List two difficulties: for example, finding words quickly and understanding follow-up questions.
  • Check your setup: choose a quiet space and test your connection, microphone and headphones.
  • Leave room for notes: write down useful corrections and the tutor’s suggested next steps.

Avoid memorising a perfect speech simply to impress the tutor. It can hide the areas where you need help. Explain when you are searching for words or misunderstanding a question, so the session gives you useful information.

You do not need an elaborate presentation. A few concrete examples and honest questions are enough to make a discussion more focused.

After the trial: use a simple decision scorecard

Take a few minutes to write down what happened while it is fresh. These are our suggested questions, not a Preply rating system. You can mark each as yes, unsure or no.

CheckAsk yourself
CommunicationCould I understand the explanations and ask questions comfortably?
PracticeDid I get a chance to try the skill I came to improve?
FeedbackCan I name one correction or useful next step?
PlanDo I understand what the next lessons would work on?
Practical fitCan I afford the plan and attend suitable regular slots?

An enjoyable conversation and a useful lesson can overlap, but they are not identical. Look for evidence that the teaching approach suits you. If several answers remain unclear, ask follow-up questions before committing.

A single trial cannot establish long-term progress. Use it to judge the working relationship and whether the proposed routine is realistic.

If you need to cancel, reschedule or change tutors

Preply’s student cancellation policy applies a 12-hour window. Cancelling a trial at least 12 hours before it starts returns it to your balance; cancelling later does not. Check the lesson time shown in your account and act early.

Sending a message alone does not change the booking status. Use the account controls and confirm the new status or time. If something unexpected happens, contact the tutor or support and explain the situation promptly.

For a completed trial that was a poor fit, the replacement policy allows requests for up to two free replacements per account, subject to review. Starting a subscription with that tutor makes a trial replacement unavailable. Tutor no-shows follow a separate process.

A replacement is not the same as a cash refund. Do not subscribe simply because you expect to recover the cost later. Ask support about your specific case before buying more lessons if the first experience was unsuitable.

Before continuing: understand the subscription

Preply’s subscription documentation describes automatic 28-day renewals with one tutor. Review the selected plan, next charge and scheduling rules before starting. A billing cycle is not the same as a calendar month.

Set a reminder in your own calendar for the renewal date, and reserve the lesson times you intend to use. Choose the smallest realistic commitment for your schedule rather than buying more practice than you can attend.

Cancellation stops future charges; it does not automatically create a refund. Review Preply’s refund guidance and contact support for eligibility. Each request is reviewed individually.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Preply trial lesson free?

The standard trial is paid. Check your booking amount; a conditional replacement benefit does not make everyone’s first lesson free.

Should I pick the cheapest tutor?

Use price as one filter. Also compare teaching focus, understandable feedback and regular availability. The cheapest option is not necessarily the best fit for your goal.

What should I ask during the trial?

Ask what you should work on first, how the tutor would structure practice and what you could do between sessions. Request a concrete example related to your goal.

Does the affiliate link guarantee a discount?

No student discount has been verified for this link. Check any offer and its eligibility in your own checkout. Affiliate commission is separate from the learner’s price.
