A sensible hosting choice starts with the second bill.
InMotion offers a path from shared hosting to managed servers. The right purchase depends on your workload, renewal budget and who will maintain the environment—not simply the advertised discount.
Compare Current InMotion Plans
Check the selected term, renewal rate and included services before ordering.
Who should buy InMotion Hosting?
InMotion deserves a place on your shortlist when you want a conventional hosting control panel, a range of service levels and the option to move to managed infrastructure later. It is most useful to compare it against the work your website actually needs to perform.
A local business with a brochure site has different priorities from an agency maintaining client accounts. A shop may care more about checkout consistency, recovery and support scope than the number of websites included. Make those requirements explicit before choosing a tier.
Start with shared
For a business website, blog or portfolio. Compare the smallest plan that meets your site count and application requirements.
Evaluate managed VPS
For a resource need you can demonstrate, with help operating the server. Check the scope of management and recovery first.
Assess self-managed
For developers who need control and have time for software maintenance, monitoring and a tested recovery process.
These are editorial starting points, not workload guarantees. If you cannot identify the constraint in your current hosting, measure it first. Changing providers will not automatically repair inefficient database queries, oversized images or a malfunctioning plugin.
Launch vs Power vs Pro: compare the essentials
InMotion’s shared-hosting page lists three tiers. The table below summarizes published capacity and example USD price pairs. Several prices appear for each tier, so confirm the billing term and selection that apply to your order.
| Shared plan | Sites / NVMe storage | Intro example | Renewal example | Our shortlist use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launch | 2 / 100GB | $4.99/mo | $13.99/mo | A small website portfolio |
| Power | 10 / 200GB | $5.99/mo | $17.99/mo | Several projects with growth plans |
| Pro | 40 / 300GB | $10.99/mo | $24.99/mo | A larger portfolio with justified capacity needs |
These figures are examples from the official shared-hosting page, not a quote for every term. Launch lists chat and ticket support; the higher tiers list phone support as well. Domain-credit eligibility and later domain renewal have separate conditions.
Do not translate website allowances into guaranteed traffic capacity. Ten lightly used sites and one demanding store can consume very different resources. Review actual storage, application compatibility and usage patterns rather than choosing by the largest number in a table.
For a fuller tier decision, use our Launch vs Power vs Pro comparison. It is the supporting guide for shared-plan selection; this pillar brings together the broader buying decision.
If you only need one or two straightforward sites, start your comparison with Launch. Move up when an included feature or allowance solves a specific need. Unused capacity is not a saving.
Renewal costs: calculate the commitment before checkout
The introductory monthly equivalent tells you only part of the cost. Hosting can be prepaid for a longer period, and the later rate can be considerably higher. Put the first invoice and next renewal on separate lines before comparing providers.
Use this calculation: monthly equivalent × months billed + required extras + applicable taxes. Repeat it with the renewal rate and actual renewal term. Do not assume the first-term rate continues or that every configuration renews for the same number of months.
| Price pair above | 12-month equivalent at intro | 12-month equivalent at renewal | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch example | $59.88 | $167.88 | $108.00 |
| Power example | $71.88 | $215.88 | $144.00 |
| Pro example | $131.88 | $299.88 | $168.00 |
Calculation note: these are annualized equivalents for comparison, not verified twelve-month checkout offers. An advertised price may require a longer commitment. The final order summary determines the actual amount due and the later invoice.
Then budget for services around the server. A domain, external email, premium software, backup storage and administrator time may renew separately. A first-year domain credit does not remove the domain’s later cost. Keep the service names and renewal dates with the order record.
A longer term can make sense for an established site when the platform already meets requirements. For a new experiment, flexibility can be worth more than a slightly lower monthly average. Compare the amount of cash committed now with the realistic lifetime of the project.
Managed VPS vs self-managed VPS: who does the work?
InMotion’s managed VPS page lists panel maintenance, OS patching, backups and onboarding assistance. Self-managed VPS assigns the software environment to your team. Confirm the exact scope for the selected product; a management label should not replace a discussion about who handles an incident.
| Decision | Managed VPS | Self-managed VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Routine server administration | Provider performs the listed managed services | Your administrator owns the software environment |
| Budget beyond base hosting | Optional services and work outside the agreement | Licenses, tools and administrator time |
| Strongest fit | A business needing operational assistance | A team comfortable maintaining its stack |
| Website responsibility | You still own application acceptance and business workflows | You own application and server operations |
The managed VPS page displayed a 4 vCPU example at $39.49/month on a 24-month term, renewing at $46.49/month, among other configurations. At that introductory example, 24 months total $947.76 before tax and extras. Confirm location, panel and other choices before treating this as your quote.
Compare our InMotion VPS Hosting review for server buying considerations, and shared hosting vs VPS for the upgrade trigger. A VPS should solve a resource or control requirement; it is not an automatic next step for every WordPress site.
What we like—and what needs closer checking
Strengths for the right buyer
- A range of service models: you can compare simpler hosting and more involved infrastructure within one provider’s product range.
- Published renewal examples: the product pages provide useful information for comparing the first term with later costs.
- Migration assistance: an eligible transfer can reduce some of the technical work of switching.
- Documented management options: you can ask concrete questions about the services behind a server plan.
Limitations to include in the decision
- Renewal increases: the lower first-term rate may be far below the later bill.
- Prepayment: a longer commitment makes changing direction more expensive.
- Scope differences: backup, management and support arrangements must be compared at the product level.
- Unproven site-specific results: advertised specifications do not establish how your own store or application will behave.
We have not measured these plans’ uptime, response time or support speed for this review. Our recommendation is based on published product details and the practical ownership questions above. For a performance-led purchase, test a representative copy of your site and compare results with the same workload.

Migration, email and recovery: plan the move as a project
InMotion describes free transfer options for eligible cPanel backups and standard WordPress sites, subject to size and configuration. Larger or complex transfers can involve paid work. Ask for confirmation for your actual account rather than assuming a broad migration claim covers everything.
Its transfer documentation distinguishes methods and explains that cPanel transfers can include account email. A website-only backup should not be assumed to move an external mailbox service. Confirm historical mail, aliases, DNS and final synchronization separately.
- Inventory website files, databases, mailboxes, scheduled tasks and external services.
- Save an independent recovery copy outside the old hosting account.
- Agree on transfer scope, any charges and a realistic testing period.
- Test logins, forms, checkout, mail delivery and HTTPS on the destination.
- Plan how new orders or leads will be synchronized during cutover.
- Keep the old service accessible until the move is validated.
Follow our InMotion Hosting migration checklist for the detailed sequence. Keep the migration date separate from the promotion deadline so a sales offer does not force an untested launch.
Refunds and domain credits: read the exact conditions
InMotion’s guarantee page lists different windows by product and term, including 90 days for shared hosting and qualifying longer VPS terms, and 30 days for certain monthly services. Add-ons, domain fees and professional services have exclusions.
The provider’s homepage also discusses prorated eligibility, so ask support to confirm the amount and process for your exact purchase if the wording differs. Save the relevant order terms. A refund window is a condition of the agreement, not an assurance that every charge will be returned.
Domain credits on qualifying terms cover the first year. Later domain renewal is separate, and cancellation can lead to a domain fee being deducted from the hosting refund. Budget for the domain independently even if it appears on the first hosting invoice.
When to compare another provider—or keep your current host
Compare alternatives if a must-have feature, location or renewal budget does not fit. Use the same time period and service scope across hosts. A managed server and a self-managed base plan are different purchases even when their CPU and memory look similar.
Our Bluehost vs InMotion comparison can help structure that shortlist. Confirm each provider’s current quote before deciding. If your current host meets requirements and the only motivation is a temporary discount, include migration time and risk in the calculation.
Stay put while diagnosing a problem when you do not yet know whether the bottleneck is hosting, application code or a third-party service. Moving becomes a stronger decision when you can state the problem, the expected improvement and how you will measure it.
Black Friday: compare a suitable plan first
Our InMotion Hosting Black Friday guide separates current public promotions from an independently confirmed seasonal campaign. Do not assume the largest advertised percentage applies to your chosen service or to its renewal.
Before buying, save the selected product, term, complete invoice, renewal quote and optional services. Avoid adding a longer commitment simply to improve the displayed discount. The right offer makes a suitable purchase more affordable; it does not make an unsuitable plan useful.

InMotion Hosting review FAQs
Is InMotion Hosting good for a beginner?
Shared hosting is the first product type to compare for a beginner with a conventional website. Confirm the tools, support channels and application needs. Self-managed VPS adds technical responsibilities that a first site may not need.
Which shared plan should I choose?
Compare Launch for a small portfolio, then move to Power or Pro when an allowance or feature justifies it. Do not select a higher tier solely because its advertised saving is larger. Our plan comparison covers the details.
Will the introductory price continue at renewal?
Do not assume so. The reviewed price examples show different renewal rates. Save the quote for your chosen term and check your subscription details after purchase.
Is a VPS always faster than shared hosting?
No. Resource allocation is only one factor. Application design, database queries, caching and frontend assets also matter. Measure the problem and test the destination with a representative workload.
Does migration assistance include email?
It depends on the method and account. cPanel transfers can include account mail, while website-only backups and external email require separate checks. Get coverage confirmed for your actual move.
Is the free domain free every year?
No. The qualifying credit covers the first year. Later renewal and cancellation conditions apply. Keep the domain’s renewal schedule in your budget.
Has this review independently tested uptime or support?
No. It is a documentation-based review with editorial buying guidance. It does not present an independent performance score or support-response measurement.
Editorial method: current official product and policy pages are linked beside the relevant facts. Price calculations are labeled, and recommendations are our judgment based on use case and ownership costs. Prices and packaging may change; verify the final order before payment.
