Keep your Mac—and test the Windows workflow you need
Power BI on Mac with Parallels Desktop is a practical option to investigate when you need the Windows desktop application. Parallels documents an installation route using a Windows virtual machine, including on Apple silicon. That does not establish that every report, connector or company environment will work without issues.
My recommendation: test a representative report and its data connections before buying. If your work is already handled in a browser, check that route first. Buy virtualization software when it solves a specific desktop requirement.

Can you run Power BI Desktop on a Mac?
Parallels publishes a Power BI installation guide for Windows 11 running on a Mac with Apple silicon. Its Power BI product page also describes running the Windows application through Parallels. This is a Windows-in-a-virtual-machine approach, rather than a native macOS edition of Desktop.
Keep a distinction between a vendor-documented installation and a guarantee for your particular workload. Parallels’ knowledge base lists known Power BI visual errors on Arm-powered systems. Microsoft’s Desktop requirements include a Windows-on-Arm update requirement and separate virtualization support conditions. Have your IT team confirm the support arrangement for business-critical work.
A useful evaluation answers three questions: does the application launch, does your real report behave correctly, and can your organization support the complete setup? A yes to the first question should not be taken as evidence for the other two.
Do you need Desktop, or will the browser service do?
Microsoft’s report overview explains that the Power BI service can create reports in a browser. Avoid assuming that browser access is only for viewing. The relevant question is whether the browser experience covers the particular work your account and organization allow.
| Your requirement | Start by checking | Decision to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Read a report shared by colleagues | Your organization’s browser access | Permissions and licensing |
| Create or edit a report online | Available service features | Whether the required workflow is covered |
| Work with an existing Desktop project | The project’s desktop dependencies | Local Windows setup or an approved remote environment |
| Use specialized drivers or integrations | Vendor and IT compatibility guidance | Architecture, security and support |
Write down the action you cannot currently complete on your Mac. If the answer is simply “open the team dashboard,” ask for the correct service access before buying software. If the task requires a desktop-only dependency, evaluate the Windows route against that specific requirement.
What to check before installing anything
Record your Mac model, chip, macOS version, installed memory and free storage. Check those details against the current Parallels requirements and supported guest systems on the official product page. Do not use an old tutorial’s version assumptions for a newer Mac.
On Apple silicon, pay particular attention to Windows on Arm. Microsoft’s Arm FAQ explains that drivers need appropriate Arm support. A Windows application can start successfully while a peripheral, database driver or related component still fails.
For company data, ask whether a local virtual machine is approved. Confirm the expected sign-in method, device-management rules and where files may be stored. Keep the evaluation within the organization’s existing requirements rather than changing security settings just to make a demonstration work.

Setup checklist: Power BI in a Windows virtual machine
1. Install Parallels from the official source
Use the official download page and check any trial conditions shown to you. Keep the installer and account details associated with the current product. This guide does not promise a particular trial length or eligibility.
2. Create the appropriate Windows environment
Follow the current Parallels setup flow for your Mac architecture. Microsoft’s Windows-on-Mac guidance explains the separate Windows licensing requirement. Downloading or installing Windows is not the same as receiving a paid Windows license with Parallels.
3. Update Windows before adding the reporting application
Install current Windows updates and restart as required. Microsoft’s Desktop documentation specifically lists a September 2025 cumulative update requirement for Windows on Arm, KB5065789. Check its current guidance if your installation reports that requirement as missing.
4. Get the current Power BI Desktop from Microsoft
Use Microsoft’s current Store or download route inside Windows. Follow its supported version guidance. Avoid treating a workaround in an older article as the preferred installation path today, especially if it recommends a discontinued application build.
5. Test with a small, non-sensitive sample first
Create a simple report from sample data, save it, close the application and reopen it. Then introduce the features used in your actual work one at a time. This makes failures easier to identify than importing a complicated production project as the first test.
6. Validate the complete work cycle
Test refresh, filters, visuals, export and the sharing steps you need. Confirm sign-in and permissions through your normal organization process. Record what worked and what failed, along with version numbers, so you can give useful information to support.
Compatibility limits that deserve a real test
Parallels maintains an Apple silicon limitations page. The important lesson for buyers is that the guest operating system’s architecture affects compatibility. A recommendation written for an Intel Mac should not automatically be applied to an Apple silicon setup.
For Power BI, build a checklist around your actual data sources. Include each required connector, any separate provider or driver, authentication, file paths and custom visuals. A demonstration that loads a CSV does not prove that an enterprise database connection will work.
Also check the expectations of the person who will support the system. Microsoft’s Desktop documentation describes fully supported Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 environments and places limits on other virtualized arrangements. Parallels’ installation documentation does not turn every local VM scenario into a Microsoft-supported enterprise deployment.
If a key component fails, investigate its documented support requirements before buying a higher Parallels edition. More allocated memory may help a resource constraint; it will not make an incompatible driver become compatible.
Budget for the complete setup
Keep the price of virtualization software separate from the operating system and reporting service. Microsoft’s Power BI license guide explains how sharing and collaboration depend on licenses and capacity. A Parallels subscription does not include those Microsoft entitlements.
| Budget item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Parallels | Edition, first-year charge and next renewal quote |
| Windows | Existing valid entitlement or additional license cost |
| Power BI service | Licensing and capacity required by the team’s workflow |
| Other dependencies | Paid drivers, software or approved remote access |
| Support time | Setup, testing, backups and ongoing maintenance |
Use the final checkout amounts in the same currency and include applicable tax consistently. If a coupon reduces only the initial term, budget separately for the following year. Do not assume the discounted first payment is the renewal commitment.
Standard, Pro or Business: choose the requirement first
Compare the current editions against the resources and management features you need. The official Standard-versus-Pro comparison is the appropriate reference for current differences. Business buyers can also review the Business product page.
For an individual, start by asking whether the lower edition supports the tested workload within its current limits. For a team, ask whether centralized administration or deployment requirements determine the edition. Choose Business because its management capabilities are needed, rather than because a separate coupon happens to exist.
Test the workflow, then check the offer
Once your report, connections and support requirements are validated, compare the current edition prices. Try PD45 for eligible new Standard/Pro annual subscriptions or PD35 for eligible new Business annual subscriptions, subject to checkout acceptance.
A practical acceptance test before purchase
- Open a representative report using a copy of permitted test data.
- Refresh every required data source.
- Check measures, filters and the visuals that matter to your users.
- Export the formats you normally deliver.
- Test any required publishing or collaboration step.
- Restart the environment and repeat the core task.
- Check that your normal Mac applications remain usable alongside it.
- Confirm a backup and recovery process for your working files.
Set a pass-or-fail condition for each item. “Feels fine” is difficult to evaluate later. “Refreshes the permitted sample successfully and produces the expected totals” is a more useful acceptance condition. Keep the results so a future update can be tested against the same baseline.

Our verdict
Shortlist Parallels when a local Windows desktop workflow solves a clear problem, the representative workload passes your tests, and the complete license cost is acceptable. It can be a convenient way to keep using a Mac while accessing a required Windows application.
Check the browser service first when your needs are already covered there. Consider an approved Windows machine or remote environment when compatibility, support or company policy requires it. The strongest buying reason is a working, supportable process—not a discount percentage.
